The American Academy in Rome to Honor Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell

Spelman College President CampbellSpelman College President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., along with writer John Guare, and artist Julie Mehretu will be honored by The American Academy in Rome  at the 2021 New York Gala in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, October 26. The honorees are heralded for advancing the arts and humanities and exemplifying outstanding achievements in the disciplines in which Rome Prize Fellowships, Italian Fellowships, and invited Residences are conferred.

Established in 1894, AAR is America’s oldest overseas center for independent studies and advanced research in the arts and humanities. The organization's gala will honor luminaries in the arts and humanities as well as celebrate the unique interdisciplinary collaboration that happens every day at the American Academy in Rome. Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, the world’s leading institution devoted to visual art by artists of African descent, will present Dr. Campbell at the ceremony.  

Dr. Campbell, a stalwart champion of the arts, earned a Ph.D., in humanities at Syracuse University and directed the Studio Museum in Harlem from 1977 to 1987 before serving as commissioner of cultural affairs for New York City under two mayors. In 1991, she became dean of Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where she also founded the Department of Art and Public Policy. In 2009, Barack Obama appointed her to become vice chair of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. She is the author of the award-winning book An American Odyssey: The Life and Work of Romare Bearden (2018).
