Blanca Burch Publishes Culturally Relevant Children's Book

September 2021

Spelman Senior Bianca Burch Pens Her irst Children's BookSenior international studies major, management and organizational minor Blanca Burch, C'2022, recently published her first book, "Who Has Hair Like Mine?" which she co-authored with her mother Michelle Burch.

Throughout her matriculation at Spelman, Burch discovered a passion for entrepreneurship and helping others with their entrepreneurial ventures. Through this passion she founded the Spelman Entrepreneurship Club, published her first book and launched a publishing company.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, her goal is to help other entrepreneurs on the campus access resources and expand their network throughout the city of Atlanta. Burch is also a Blackstone Entrepreneur Fellow in the new Blackstone Launchpad at Spelman. As a Fellow, she was awarded a $2000 stipend, access to signature programming, and mentorship through the startup ecosystem at Spelman, the AUC, and in the broader Atlanta Startup ecosystem.

In an interview with "Our Issues Milwaukee," the daughter and mom author team discuss the book and what inspired them to write it.

"Who Has Hair Like Mine?"

In the book "Who has Hair Like Mine?" readers are taken on an exciting journey as they join Sophie on a cultural adventure as the main character takes a walk with her mom around her neighborhood and to the hair salon. Along their journey, Sophie learns about the different hair textures and styles found in the Black community. More importantly, Sophie learns to love her hair and all that her hair can do.

Culturally Kreative Changes the Narrative

New Book by Spelman Senior Bianca BurchBurch, an avid world traveler who is fluent in French and currently learning Japanese, is passionate about changing the narrative about cultural education in the American school system. She has worked in schools in both Wisconsin and Atlanta, Georgia.

By launching Culturally Kreative, the Burch family endeavors to diversify the children's book industry by publishing diverse books with diverse authors and artists. Culturally Kreative believes that "By expanding our knowledge of the world around us and providing opportunities for children to learn with us, the company will ultimately have a global impact and benefit all mankind." 

"Who Has Hair Like Mine?" is now available at all major online book retailers, including AmazonBarnes and Noble and Walmart.
