Shaeloren Deering Pursues Her Passion in Neuroscience

July 2021

In her own words, Des Moines, Iowa native Shaeloren Deering, C'2021, discusses why her Spelman experience was invaluable.

Spelman Alumna Shaeloren Deering "Spelman College is home to some of the most challenging, exhilarating and rewarding years of my life. My collegiate experience shaped me into a woman who has exceeded some of her wildest dreams. It is within the Spelman College gates that I grew into a better individual. Whether it was participating in the Undergraduate Health Sciences Academy at Morehouse School of Medicine, being selected as an American Heart Association HBCU Scholar, completing summer research (every summer), or being initiated into the "Sweet" Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Spelman not only exposed me to various opportunities, but also prepared me to excel within them," said Deering.

Large Blue Quote LeftIt is hard to explain how much this institution will mold you and change you for the better. You look up one day and realize you are not the same person who walked through those gates four years ago. The transition is astonishing and I will forever love the sisterhood.

Spelman Alumna Shaeloren Deering on Neuroscience Program"I started my Master of Science in Neuroscience my junior year at Spelman through the B.S./ M.S. in Neuroscience program at Morehouse School of Medicine. I am continuing my studies in this program and will graduate from MSM with a Master of Science in Neuroscience in May 2022 (one-year post-undergrad and with a scholarship and stipend).

In the future, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D. and will work diligently to fix the health disparities that plague our communities." Discover more great stories about Spelman graduates on Instagram and Facebook using #SpelmanGrad21
