Spelman Board Chair Rosalind Gates Brewer Discusses Business and Life on the Today Show

May 2021

Spelman Trustee Rosalind Brewer Spelman College's Board of Trustees chair, Rosalind Gates Brewer, C'84, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, is one of just two Black women leading Fortune 500 companies. In a recent interview with Hoda Kotb, co-anchor of the Today Show, Brewer speaks about her innovative approach to business and life. She also talks about her journey from Detroit, Michigan to Spelman where she majored in chemistry; her hardworking and supportive parents who insisted she and her siblings make education a priority; and her phenomenal success in corporate America.

During the interview, Brewer, a wife and mother of two, also discusses Walgreens’ integral role in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. She says her move to join Walgreens even in the midst of a pandemic was intentional for her as she always wanted to "Have impact, make change happen, lead something that would leave an impression on people's lives." She credits her mother and father for instilling in her a love for education and an incredible work ethic; and acknowledges her sister and her college counselor in high school, alumna Dr. Geneva Carter, for urging her to apply to Spelman.

"I think sometimes that a lot of who I am came from my experience at Spelman. The faculty here nurtured me in a way that I've never seen in my life," said Brewer, a first generation college student. "This is the place where I came alive."
