Future Forward

Future Forward is a limited podcast series of deep-dive conversations with BIPOC documentary filmmakers as they reimagine their future and the industry. The podcast brings together a wide array of diverse filmmakers and asks, “what truly matters in today’s climate?”

Author Arundhati Roy inspired the series. She wrote an article early in the novel coronavirus pandemic called “The Pandemic is a Portal.” There is a beautiful and haunting close to the article that stayed with me.

Start of QuoteHistorically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks, and dead ideas, our dead rivers, and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to End of Quoteimagine another world. And ready to fight for it.

In each one-hour episode, I ask my guests to become futurists by imagining a portal to another world, a future they envision for themselves and others. Featured are one-on-one conversations that expand public conversations about equity, diversity, and inclusion. What is revealed by established and emerging documentary filmmakers are common desires and varied pathways to the same outcomes. The guests include Emily Cohen Ibanez, Jennifer Crystal Chien, Dolly Turner, Wendy Eley Jackson, and Bhawan Shuchak.
