Recent Graduate, Ciara Smith, Wins City Council Seat in Hometown

October 2020

Ciara C. Smith Ciara C. Smith, C'2020, was victorious in her run for city council in her hometown of Anniston, Alabama. Her campaign focused on educational programs, economic development, drug rehabilitation and public transportation.

Political activism is not new for Smith, she held the role of Secretary of Student Affairs for the Spelman Student Government Association, and has been civically minded since high school.

She says her motivation for running as a council member is simple. "I was raised by a strong village in the 3rd Ward - a community that taught me to be fearless and to stand strong in my truth, our truth. With a fresh perspective, it is my mandate to bring opportunity and exposure back into this place. Running this campaign on pure passion and grit, I am prepared to revitalize, reconstruct and replenish."

Smith's mission is to pursue a career in politics with the goal of strengthening community voices and advocacy for injustice.
