A Message for the Class of 2020
“I think this moment will stay with us for the rest of our lives. As we go on our perspective paths, I hope my fellow seniors will always seize the moment. Although this moment has been hard for us, we have handled this situation with grace. I am in awe of how our class has made the most out of our situation despite the circumstances.”

While studying at Spelman, McClam discovered that she could work for global peace by bridging the gap between various cultures through diplomacy. As a student, she traveled to seven Spanish-speaking countries to conduct research on how Afro-Uruguayan women mobilize politically. During the summer of 2019, McClam interned with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and was selected as a Council of American Ambassadors Fellow.

A Recipient of Top-tier Awards
This year, following a highly competitive nationwide contest, McClam was awarded the 2020 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship. As part of the Pickering program, McClam will spend summer 2021 working as an intern with the U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C. In the summer of 2022, the Department of State will send her abroad to gain hands-on experience with U.S. foreign policy. After completing her graduate degree, McClam will become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and embark on one of the most challenging and rewarding careers of service to her country.

A 2019 Truman finalist, McClam has also served in numerous leadership roles on campus; and was president of the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a head Peer Assistant Leader (PAL), the intern for Spelman’s Women in Excellence Leadership (WEL) program, and a Spanish tutor in Spelman’s Language Lab
