In Her Own Words: Kayla Johnson, C'2020

May 2020

When I entered Spelman College four years ago, I had no idea about what was to come. Spelman had been my dream school since I was in the third grade. I was always drawn to the idea of attending an institution specifically created for powerful, intelligent Black women.

As I reflect on my time at Spelman, I realize that I have transformed into one of “those women” that I so admired growing up. I came into Spelman both timid and shy. I was a young woman who struggled to find and use her voice. I was unsure of what I wanted to do in the world and who I wanted to become. As I reminisce on these last few years, I see how I have evolved.

I found my voice and have become a risk-taker, a woman who challenges the status quo. I walk into rooms with confidence knowing that I do and will continue to represent my beloved institution. The relationships and experiences that result from my Spelman experience are priceless. I know that upon graduating from Spelman, I am fully equipped to change the world and I plan to do so in the field of education. #SpelmanGrad20
