Graduate School Acceptance: Dorcas Yaa Yeboah Gyekye, Class of 2020

May 2020

Spelman Senior Gyekye DorcasDorcas Yaa Yeboah Gyekye, C'2020, is a graduating senior, education studies major from Richmond, Virginia by way of Accra, Ghana. With the guidance from the Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers (IRT), she has been accepted into nine graduate schools: Brandeis University, University of Maryland, Tufts University, Boston College, Stanford University, Duke University, Brown University, Vanderbilt University and Teachers College, Columbia University. Additionally, Gyekye received full scholarships to Duke, Boston College and Brown.

Like the many people who invested in Gyekye and walk alongside her along her journey, she is committed to investing in the lives of those who will come after her. She plans to dedicate her career to closing the opportunity gap in the American education system. Her educational philosophy is "brilliance is everywhere, opportunity is not." She believes the possibilities are endless for a child once he/she is given the resources needed to thrive.

After earning her Master of Education in Teaching Secondary Social Studies, Gyekye plans to teach in middle schools in under-resourced communities in the Southeast region of the United States. While teaching, she wants to start an after-school program for Black and Latinx children that focuses on promoting family literacy, social justice, and advocacy while also equipping students with the skills they need to be successful so they can reach their future college and/or career goals.

Later in life, Gyekye plans to pursue a Doctor of Education degree and ultimately become a superintendent.
