Alumna Becomes First Recipient of Landscape Architecture Scholarship

December 2019

Whitney BarrWhitney Barr, C’2013, is the recipient of the first Landscape Architecture Foundation Honor Scholarship for Inclusive Community Design, a $10,000 award that supports students who want to address large scale design in underserved urban communities. Barr is pursuing a master’s degree in landscape architecture at the College of Environment and Design, University of Georgia. She attributes being raised by sharecroppers in Sapelo, South Carolina, to allowing her to understand the challenges that face overlooked and underserved communities.

“I continue to be inspired by the resilience of the people of Sapelo,” she said. “Every time I come on the island, I realize that there is so much more for me to learn about this place, the African Diaspora and our deep connections to food and land.”
