Screen Shot 2019-11-18 at 10.03.54 AMSpelman is among three historically Black colleges and universities selected to receive a total of $3 million in grant funding to support faculty development. The Carnegie Corporation of New York and The Rockefeller Foundation awarded $1 million to Spelman. Morehouse College and Prairie View A&M University each received $1 million from Carnegie Corporation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, respectively.

Spelman will use the funding to support faculty at every phase of their academic career, with an emphasis on assisting in the move from associate to full professor. “Heavy teaching loads often get in the way of professional development, time for research and/or creative production. Yet, time for these activities not only keeps faculty current in their fields, but provides undergraduate research opportunities for our students,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman.

“We are grateful for the foresight of the Carnegie, Rockefeller and Mellon Foundations in making this historic gift.”

The grant will support Spelman faculty grow the curriculum in areas of emerging importance while nurturing the trajectory of leaders on campus and in their respective fields. The grant supports Spelman faculty plans to grow the curriculum in areas of emerging importance, nurture their trajectories as leaders on campus and in their respective fields, and share best practices with the broader HBCU community.
