Kathleen Wessel, senior lecturer of
dance performance and choreography at Spelman, received an award for outstanding choreography for her work on the new musical “Flying Lessons,” during the 2019 New York Music Festival.
About the Musical
Frederick Douglass and Amelia Earhart are at the center of “Flying Lessons,” which premiered at the festival. In the show, Isabella, a young Latina girl, is assigned a school project about a historical figure. While trying to decide which figure to choose, she is visited in her dreams by Earhart and Douglass.
About Kathleen Wessel
Wessel teaches dance writing, theory, composition and technique courses. She also directs the Spelman Dance Theatre and curates “Studio Sessions,” the
Department of Dance Performance and Choreography's master class series. Wessel is currently working on a new immersive theater production with Kelly Bartnik, a Brooklyn-based choreographer and director. The project titled “HERE: Atlanta,” is set to open in early 2020.
