Alumna Returns to ‘The Lion King,’ Encourages Spelman Students to Create Opportunities

October 2019

Adrienne Walker, C'2008Adrienne Walker, C’2008, will return to the Broadway stage to reprise the role of Nala in the critically-acclaimed “The Lion King.” Walker returns to the role after playing Hattie in the Tony-nominated revival of “Kiss Me Kate.”  The former music major with a concentration in vocal performance came to Spelman for the College’s Glee Club.

“I was pushed to be my best there,” she said. “Spelman was an incubator for my self-esteem, talent and insight into being a Black woman.” Professors, such as Kevin Johnson, associate professor of music and Glee Club director, encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. “Spelman also taught me how to tell a story,” she said. “To Spelman students interested in pursuing a career on Broadway, be willing to say yes and if there are no opportunities in front of you, create them.”
