Nine Spelman Students to Participate in the Fulton County Teaching Program

September 2019

Nia BesterAs a participant in the Fulton County FirstSTEP Program, Nia D. Bester, C'2020, (pictured) is obtaining an inside look at teaching. "I've always known that I wanted to teach," said the education major.

"The education department has been the best part of my Spelman experience. I love helping children learn new things and encouraging them to believe they can do anything."

Bester is one of nine Spelman students, all seniors and education majors, who are participating in the program. In partnership with Spelman's education department, FirstSTEP recruits and develops top teacher candidates for future employment with Fulton County Schools.

Being a student in the education department and participating in the program has helped Asha Bradford, C’2020, obtain what she considers critical components for success. "Teaching goes beyond instruction," she said. "The education department has encouraged me and shaped me into a committed, high-quality teacher who is dedicated to educating our youth."
