Amazon Opportunity Inspires Princess Sampson, C’2022

August 2019

Spelman College Student Princess Sampson at AmazonParticipating in a Black Girls Code workshop at Spelman while in middle school laid the foundation for Princess Sampson, C’2022, to spend her summer at Amazon this year. A computer science major, Sampson worked in Seattle, Washington, as part of Amazon’s Future Engineer program.

She is one of 100 college freshmen and sophomores from across the United States and Canada in the program. In addition, she is the only software engineering intern from a historically Black college or university.

“Being the only Black person on my team, and in a large part of my organization, has increased my passion for exposing under-tapped communities to careers in technology,” she said.

“The opportunity to engage with a relatively liberal, but still corporate workplace environment like Amazon’s has helped me hone my career interests in terms of my desire to merge academia, industry and civic engagement.”

A scholar in the Honors Program at Spelman, Sampson is a web/mobile/backend developer, Oracle Certified Associate, 3x coding bootcamp alumni, and writer interested in pursuing a career in ethical and empathetic computer science.

She works at the intersection of technology with entrepreneurship, intersectional feminism, digital media, accessibility and design justice, history, identity, and ethics.
