Spelman President
Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., was among the presidents of more than 100 selective colleges and universities from the
American Talent Initiative to participate in the annual Presidential Summit at Bloomberg LP in New York.
During the summit’s recognition breakfast, Spelman was honored for demonstrating leadership in expanding access and providing opportunity for lower-income students. ATI has a goal to make the nation’s top colleges more accessible for 50,000 additional low and moderate-income students by 2025.
As ATI’s sole historically Black college and one of two all-women’s colleges, Spelman is particularly focused on improving retention and graduation rates. Forty-eight percent of Spelman students receive Pell grants. “Spelman’s commitment to access and opportunity is deeply ingrained in the fabric of the institution,” said Dr. Campbell. “Spelman can expand on this commitment by improving students’ graduation rates and making a Spelman degree more affordable for lower-income students.”
