Spelman Receives Grant to Support Training in Artificial Intelligence

February 2019

Artificial Intelligence Spelman has received a grant from the Department of Defense Under the Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering to engage the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in supporting faculty and student training and research in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The proposed activities include introducing AI/ML to faculty with an emphasis on how AI/ML can enhance their research efforts and provide students an intensive summer experience in which they take mathematics and programming courses and receive an introduction to AI/ML through hands-on project modules. The grant will support the research work of faculty/student research teams who use AI/ML during the academic year and support their travel to ARL labs to work with their research staff during the summer.

The goal is for Spelman to become a center where faculty and students from the local community and statewide can be trained in AI/ML.
