Alumna Earns Master’s Degree Abroad, Credits Spelman Faculty With Inspiring Her Accomplishment

October 2018

Camille MayWhen she entered Spelman, Camille May, C’2016, knew she would study abroad at some point, but she never planned to complete an entire graduate program abroad. May recently earned a master’s degree in social policy and planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

“I made clear to anyone who would listen that I had intentions of studying abroad,” she said. In a conversation with Stephen Knadler, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of English, she shared that she had an interest in living abroad. “Dr. Knadler planted the seed that I could study abroad for graduate school and recommended researching UK institutions,” said May.

Her matriculation at Spelman inspired her to consider how country context affects equitable outcomes. “Studying abroad gave me an international awareness of events that weren't necessarily popular in the American media landscape,” she said. “I returned to the USA with much more scrutiny for our awareness (or lack thereof) of world events. I'm also a lot less enchanted by political theater.”
