Jessica Anderson Marries Art, Nature, Innovation and Social Responsibility

July 2018

Jessica AndersonJessica Anderson, assistant director of the Innovation Lab at Spelman, started the summer participating in the United Nations’ Science Technology & Innovation Forum in New York City.

By the end of June, she was on the jungle island of Koh Lon in Thailand attending the Digital Naturalism Conference, facilitated by the National University of Singapore. Anderson describes the experiences as important conversations, learning and experimentation.

“My work this summer has been at the intersections of art, nature and social responsibility,” she said.

“I’ve been learning both institutional lessons, finding local and global partners to raise the voice of important work beyond Spelman’s campus to catalyze change and represent diversity of perspectives in stakeholder conversations.”

Anderson hopes to make more space in the design process to consider not only users’ needs, but also the underlying concepts built into designs.

“Art and design convey implicit messages that we must address as thoroughly as technical skill,” she said.

In Spelman College’s Innovation Lab, Anderson builds digital literacy and creative problem-solving skills among students and faculty. Her intentions are to push the boundaries of digital art and amplify the artistic voices of young, Black women.

In 2016, she finished her second master’s degree studying digital media and user-centered design at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
