Kelsey Jones Passionately Pursues Her Journalistic Goals

March 2018

English major Kelsey Jones, C'2018, is an aspiring journalist who has taken advantage of the many scholarship opportunities available to Spelman students. In 2017, Chevrolet put her in the driver's seat by naming her a National Newspaper Publishers Association/Discover the Unexpected fellow. The fellowship afforded her an opportunity to change the narrative of media reporting in the African-American community.

As a DTU fellow, Jones worked in partnership with an NNPA member paper, The Atlanta Voice. She also received a $10,000 scholarship and a stipend to defray the costs of traveling to and from school as she reported on her story.

Jones developed her passion for journalism while in high school after being on the school’s yearbook staff, and she aspires to be a local reporter/anchor in a top 10 market. The Albany, Georgia native honed her journalistic skills as a news intern at WSB-TV and a former staff writer for the Morehouse College Maroon Tiger newspaper. As a first-generation college student, Jones plans to use her voice to reach a broader audience.

In her "My Spelman Experience" video, Jones shares her story to encourage other students to launch out into the deep and "Discover the Unexpected."
