Alumna Named Associate Vice President for Research at Northwestern

Celeste Watkins-Hayes

Celeste Watkins-Hayes, Ph.D., C’96, has been named associate vice president for research at Northwestern University. Her responsibilities include working closely with the Office for Research team, supporting faculty research, and leading efforts to expand Northwestern's research footprint in the social sciences and humanities.

“It is a thrill and an honor for me to join the Office for Research,” she said. "Northwestern’s research enterprise has seen remarkable growth, and many exciting possibilities for additional important discoveries await us.”

Dr. Watkins-Hayes is also a professor of sociology and African American studies at Northwestern. She served as chair of the Department of African American Studies from 2011-13. In addition to her faculty appointments, Dr. Watkins-Hayes is a fellow at Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research and a member of Spelman College’s Board of Trustees. 

Jay Walsh, vice president of research at Northwestern, says he looks forward to collaborating with Dr. Watkins-Hayes in supporting faculty's diverse research projects. “In joining the Office for Research, Celeste will bring insights and perspective that help us further the University’s mission of creating new knowledge with positive social impact...”
