Music and More Underscore Tyia Burns' Spelman Experience

November 2017

Tyia Burns Tyia Burns, C'2020, an economics major and sociology minor from Atlanta, Georgia, has her eyes firmly fixed on success. A member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, Burns is impacting lives inside and outside of the classroom. While she has much to be proud of, she is most passionate about her involvement with the Spelman College Glee Club because it allows her to explore and showcase her musical talents while serving as a proud ambassador of Spelman College.

It's Her Choice and She's Chooses to Change the World

As a first year student, she received the Glee Club's "Most Outstanding Freshman Member Award and she is often seen humming the groups popular tunes around campus. Burns' love for Spelman is obvious. She serves as a resident adviser, a student concierge in the Welcome Center, a member of the Granddaughter's Club, and the junior public relations lead for the College's Continuum Research Journal.

Committed to Service. Committed to Leadership. 

Burns' is a true servant leader who's legacy extends beyond Spelman's gates. She works as an intern for Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority and is the recipient of the organization's 2017 Emerging Leaders Award. She has also volunteered as a Girls in P.E.A.R.L.S  representative during Judge Penny Brown Reynolds Foundation's SisterTalk Conference; and was recently granted the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s Girls Who Rule the World Leadership Award.
