Students Participate in National Park Service Internships

HBCUI 2017Seven Spelman women are working in national parks across the country this summer as part of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program. They are among 51 students participating in the program, a partnership between the National Park Service and the Greening Youth Foundation.

The 10-week internship aims to introduceChanara Andrews HBCUI diverse populations to national parks and careers in conservation and environmental stewardship. Spelman Riggio Scholar Chanara Andrews, C’2020, recently wrote a column in the Seattle Medium about her experience working at the Seattle unit of the Klondike Gold Rush National Park.

In the Seattle Medium article, she writes:

blue-quote-leftMy experience at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park – Seattle Unit (KLSE) has been particularly engaging. Half of my time is spent offering front-line interpretation services, which is interpreting Seattle’s story and blue-quote-rightbeing a resource for visitors. The other half of my work is dedicated to the development of programs to engage communities of color and the youth with the National Park Service.

Spelman’s other HBCUI interns include Annia Rochester, C’2019, (Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park); Kelsie Warmack, C’2019, (Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site); Kori Barnes, C’2020, (Grand Canyon National Park); Symeria Johnson, C’2019, (Grand Canyon National Park); Sarina Shane, C’2018, (Zion National Park); and Asha Jones, C’2019, (NPS Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta). Angelou Ezeilo, C’92, is CEO and founder of the Greening Youth Foundation.
