Students Create Interdisciplinary Journal to Highlight Undergraduate Research

March 2017

Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program students at Spelman recently celebrated the release of the student-created publication, "Continuum: The Spelman College Undergraduate Research Journal."

The interdisciplinary journal is the brainchild of Honors Program students and executive editors Ansley Carlisle, C’2018, and Abiana Adamson, C’2018, who initiated the project and organized the two-year student collaboration. All decisions on content, which cover a diverse range of topics from the arts to the sciences, were made and managed by the student editorial teams.

The new publication is meant to encourage and disseminate the research efforts of undergraduate student researchers. The journal highlights student contributions to research that affects Black women and also features Black women’s contributions and leadership in research.

The student effort was supported by faculty advisers Opal Moore, associate professor of English and Honors Program director, and Dolores Bradley Brennan, Ph.D., professor of psychology, interim vice provost and director of Undergraduate Research.

“The Continuum students have been models of independence, initiative, interdisciplinary inclusion and respect,” said Professor Moore. “It was exciting and rewarding to have been engaged with such ambitious and talented young women.”
