Thairen Greene Dade Makes Math A Lifelong Passion

Thairen Greene DadeThairen Greene Dade, C'96, has developed a lifelong love affair with math. The math learning specialist at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Spelman; and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics Education from Towson University.

Dade is a member of the Developmental Education Association of Maryland, a board member of the Autism Society of America, and a member of Special Education Citizens Advisory Council. She worked as a mathematics educator in the Boston area for number of years before joining Stevenson University where she holds several positions, including math learning specialist, adjunct instructor, visiting instructor of mathematics, course coordinator, and interim manager of The Academic Link, a student-oriented center that offers peer and professional tutoring. Dade's views on teaching reveal how passionate she is about helping others:

"The art of teaching encompasses being an active learner, a thorough listener and an approachable leader. To teach effectively, one must possess the ability to adapt to changing audiences and determine when and how to modify information so that it reaches the vast majority of the targeted audience."

blue-quote-leftblue-quote-rightWhether the audience is made up of students or peers, the art of teaching is not for the faint at heart but rather for those who truly find joy in the outcome after devoting countless amounts of time and effort with only the end result in mind.

In her new position as a math learning specialist, Dade's primary goal is to bring the fun an exciting aspects of mathematics to students who may struggle with or otherwise fear math. She specializes in discovering individualized study techniques and/or applications to support each student's unique way of learning.

"To be a true and effective teacher, I believe you first have to be a true and effective learner. You should not only be willing, but eager to learn new avenues to reach the same destination," she said. 

"Some of those avenues may include diversity in your delivery of information, adding a little extra flare to retain attention and exhibiting a bit of finesse to encourage an apprehensive learner. Either way, the art of teaching involves being a mentor, facilitator, innovator and leader. All of the qualities I continuously improve upon with each new group of students."
