Spelman Among Top 40 Colleges With the Most Study Abroad Students

January 2017

Lizette Terry Study Abroad 2016 (crop)Spelman College is ranked among the nation’s top 40 baccalaureate colleges with the highest number of students studying abroad.

According to a 2014-2015 Open Doors report recently released by the Institute of International Education, Spelman is 29th in the rankings, the only historically Black college and university to make the top 40 list of baccalaureate colleges.

The report is based on data from students studying abroad for college credit only during the 2014-2015 school year. The study showed that 324 Spelman women studied abroad for credit only, out of a total of 367 Spelman study-abroad participants that year. In keeping with the College’s goal that all students have an international experience, Spelman’s study abroad program continues to grow at a rate that is outpacing the national average of African-American students studying abroad.

In August, Spelman’s Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education led by Dimeji R. Togunde, associate provost for global education and professor of international studies, reported that a record-breaking 277 students traveled to 18 countries during summer 2016. In total, 402 Spelman students traveled to 35 countries during the 2015-2016 academic year, compared to 218 participants four years ago.
