Professors Receive Grant from U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation

November 2016

teamup Tinaz Pavri, Ph.D., political science professor, director of the Asian Studies Program and division chair of social sciences and humanities, and Dimeji R. Togunde, Ph.D., associate provost for global education and professor of international studies, have been awarded a TeamUp microgrant from the United States-Japan Bridging Foundation. The $7,000 grant will fund their travel to Japan to further develop Spelman’s student exchange programs and Asian Studies program.

“It is hoped that the grant-funded travel will lead to further opportunities for Spelman students to experience study in Japan, thereby strengthening their exposure and connection to the Asian continent, an engine of innovation and growth in the new millennium,” said Dr. Pavri.

TeamUp U.S.-Japan is a campaign funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo to increase the number of American and Japanese undergraduate and graduate students studying in each other’s countries. In June, Margery Ganz, Ph.D., history professor and director of study abroad and the International Exchange Program at Spelman, and Gretchen Cook-Anderson, C’90, director of diversity and recruiting and advising for IES Abroad, traveled to Japan for a TeamUp U.S.-Japan familiarization tour. During the trip, they met with Emerald Garrett, C’2017, an exchange student at Tsuda College, a private women’s college in Tokyo.
