Chemistry Chair Helps Spelman Secure Grant for STEM Scholarships, Outreach

Leyte Winfield The Boeing Company has awarded Spelman a $50,000 grant to fund scholarships and an outreach program in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Under the direction of Leyte Winfield, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Chemistry and interim associate provost of research, the award will provide scholarships for students majoring in computer science or dual-degree engineering and will cover stipends for SpelBots Robotics Team members who are participating in a community outreach program.

The SpelBots team takes robotics into local Title 1 classrooms to enhance the STEM learning outcomes of disadvantaged K-12 students. The award will support four Boeing Scholars and four SpelBots team members during the 2016-2017 academic year. The grant also supports STEM at Spelman and community service initiatives at the College.
