Dr. Sheron Patterson Uses Leadership Lessons to Inspire the Nation

October 2016

Dr. Sheron Patterson Speaks About Love and Leadership at SpelmanThe leadership crisis across the globe inspired The Reverend Dr. Sheron C. Patterson, C'81, to pen a work that will help turn the tide of leaders who crash and burn. Her book, "Lead Yourself Now, the Busy Leader's 30-Day Guide" is a clarion call to responsibility for all.

Leadership through the lenses of the Spelman alumna, national thought leader and glass-ceiling breaker is considered by many a "refreshingly unique perspective" and includes leadership lessons that shaped her ascent including an encounter with a custodian who swept the floors of a university she attended and lessons from her multi-tasking father.

In the chapter, "The Ability to Take the Heat," Dr. Patterson says . . .

With 25 years as a relationship counselor, media personality and prolific author, Dr. Patterson has built a national reputation as an expert in matters of the heart, mind and soul. She’s been featured in Ebony, JET, and Essence magazines, as well as on air with CNN and BET. She is the author of seven additional books.

In Celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month ...

As a cancer survivor, Dr. Patterson knows the importance of living life on purpose. After a cancer diagnosis in 2007, she mounted a multi-media campaign to help women take control of their health and face their health problems head-on. She organized survivors of breast cancer into house-building programs for Habitat for Humanity; and she launched the nonprofit, Brave Wellness, and raised thousands of dollars to help low-income and no-income women receive free mammograms.

A leader in her own community, Dr. Patterson is active in the Dallas area, and sits on the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University, the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Policy, and the Board of Directors of Methodist Health System.

She holds an undergraduate degree from Spelman, two master’s degrees and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Patterson is married to Robert Patterson Sr. Together they have two sons, Robert Jr. and Christian.

As a participant in Spelman's Alumnae Preach Series, Dr. Patterson will be the guest speaker at the worship service in Sisters Chapel on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m.
