Tendayi Kuumba, C' 2010, was cited in a
New York Times review for her performance as a featured dancer in "Being Here," a dance work choreographed by Marjani Forte (formerly with the Urban Bush Women) that premiered at Danspace in New York City March 21-23, 2013.
"Lover of life and the pulse that drives it, Tendayi Kuumba is an innovator, performer, dancer, singer, entertainer of the soul born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Buffalo, N.Y., and Atlanta, Ga.," says A. Nia Austin- Edwards, dancer, choreographer, instructor, and poet for a range of companies in Atlanta and Brooklyn.
Kuumba is a 2010 Spelman graduate who majored in Drama with a Dance concentration and minored in Psychology. She was president of the Spelman Dance Theatre under the direction of T. Lang, assistant professor of Drama and Dance, director of Spelman Dance Theatre, and recipient of several Drama Department awards and accolades.
"During her time at Spelman, Tendayi was a phenomenal dancer and emerging choreographer and dedicated student in our department. She was an inspiration to us all [...]," said T. Lang. "I had no doubt in my mind that Tendayi along with her peers that she graduated with in the dance program, would become successful and accomplish their first stage goals."
In addition to her work with LOVE/FORTE, Tendayi Kuumba currently dances with Ase Dance Theater Collective, Liberata Dance Theatre, and the Nathan Trice/Rituals Performance Project along with being the resident jazz vocalist at the Williamsburg Music Center in Brooklyn New York.
