Deborah Roberts Raise Your Head

A Two-day Art Museum Celebration

Friday, May 18
Saturday, May 19

Art museums are often anchors for public spaces and neighborhoods, and they partner with school systems and civic organizations in ways that make their towns, cities and regions better places for everyone. In honor of the the vital role art museums play as cultural, educational, and economic pillars, the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art will celebrate Art Museum Day on May 18 and 19.

Students, alumnae, parents, friends and families who are on campus for Commencement and Reunion weekend are invited to view the Museum's wildly acclaimed exhibition “Deborah Roberts: The Evolution of Mimi” before it closes on May 19.

Virtual tours of the exhibition will take place each day; and on Friday, May 18, the Museum will host a special edition of #AskACurator hosted by Makeba Dixon-Hill, the Museum's curator of education. Dixon-Hill along with special guests will field questions about the current exhibition as well as general inquiries about art and museums.

About the Ninth Annual Art Museum Day

An initiative of the Association of Art Museum Directors, Art Museum Day gathers hundreds of institutions from across North America to recognize the arts and the important role that art museums play in their communities. The Museum is inviting visitors to get involved by sharing their Art Museum Day experiences via social media, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay #LiveWithMimi and #BeYourOwnMuse.

The theme for Art Museum Day 2018 is "Hyperconnected Museums," a recognition of the many ways in which museums serve as central points of connectivity within their communities, both online and in person.

Art Museum Day at Spelman College is free and open to the public.
