Moderator: When and Where I Enter: Nursing Careers in the 21st Century

Currently associate vice president for Student Affairs at Spelman College, Brenda Dalton has spent 24 years at the institution serving in various capacities, including director of the Student Health Services Department and director of Campus Wellness at Spelman College. Born in Atlanta, Dalton has over 34 years of clinical nursing and administrative experience. Dalton is a retired Lt. Cmdr. from the U.S. Navy Reserves where she served as charge nurse for the burn unit. Because of her passion for the health of women, Dalton became a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner in 1998. As such, she was able to provide women’s health services to the students of Spelman College in addition to her administrative duties.

Dalton has made several presentations on HIV/AIDS and has guest lectured to a number of classes including freshman orientation, medical sociology, as well as senior biology classes on the subject of sexually transmitted infections affecting African-American women. Dalton chartered the peer education group SHAPE, or Student Health Associates and Peer Educators, to help educate Spelman women about their health. She has received the Spelman College “Advisor of the Year” award for three consecutive years. Dalton continues to work tirelessly in her new role by preparing a new generation of leaders to shepherd our students.
