Assignment 2: Critical Website Evaluation
I will be reviewing Women Writer Project, (WWP) which is presented by Brown University. The purpose of this website is to provide research information on early women’s writings as well as provide an electronic database from which this information may be available for reviewing. The website contains information gathered by staff, faculty members, and students from various schools in the United States. It also provides an online database with electronic versions of many of the works of women authors during this time. The main frequenters of this website would be scholars. The website provides a rationale for its organization and content on it’s “About” page. The rationale for this website is that WWP’s website combines the two growing fields of early modern women’s studies and electronic text encoding. This rationale makes a great deal of sense to me. Both fields are still growing which means that there is still a great deal of information to learn about them. Unfortunately, this website is not very user-friendly. An account must be in place in order for the visitor to access the information provided on this website. If I were doing research on 18th century literature, I would use this website to find information on women writers. On this website I would find electronic versions of these authors’ works as well as scholarly articles on these subjects. This website would go apply to the focus of this class because it would help raise the awareness of female authorship during the 18th century. This website provided great bibliography information on many of the early women writers , however I many of the articles and electronic copies of these works were not readily available to me because I did not have a log-in, therefore, I would not recommend visiting this website if you do not have a log in ID.
