Computer Forensics

Computer Forensics is an exploding field of Computer Science that works in conjunction with Criminal Justice. Wikpedia has a nice introduction to Computer Forensics, and I stole this quote from there:

... is the art and science of applying computer science to aid the legal process. Although plenty of science is attributable to computer forensics, most successful investigators possess a nose for investigations and a skill for solving puzzles, which is where the art comes in.

- Chris L.T. Brown, Computer Evidence Collection and Preservation, 2006

This quote points out that this is an application area for Computer Science to serve the legal process and it also points out that there is a fair amount of “art” to the processes. So you have to have a clever mind to be successful in this area.

Why am I interested in this area?

I find the area interesting (at one time in my life I wanted to be an FBI agent) in many ways. My research and teaching interest have always revolved around systems areas such as Compilers, Operating Systems, and Computer Networks. I believe that this is an area where many of those skills can be used and will also be one that many students would be interested in.

Do I have projects in mind?

I have not studied this area for projects, and so I am very open on the subject. My initial interests would be in digital warrens found in file systems and computer networks. However, that is just based on some of the concepts I have read about.
