Here, in no particular order, are things I would like to add to the
CS department web pages.
- A "resources" area, which has home-grown reference material on
Unix commands, Windows applications, programming help, and pointers
to such material off-site.
- An "opportunities" area, which has information about summer
internships, scholarship programs, study abroad, work-study,
permanent jobs upon graduation, grad schools, and so forth. I could
even see having pointers to companies that have hired Spelman CS
students in the past.
- We should link in our "lunch and learn" topics, and add a few
more.
- A "gallery" area that has pictures of labs, students, anything
fun like that.
- A page for prospective students, encouraging them to major in
Computer Science and telling them how to do so.
- A page or more of information about research opportunities with
professors and how to go about doing that.
- Pointers to organizations, including our ACM chapter, but also
the national ACM, IEEE, AAAI, and other professional
organizations. There could also be pointers to the next
conference, such as NCUR.
- Pages of department policies, such as rules and suggestions for
taking courses at other colleges over the summer (get a catalog
and syllabus, talk to the dept chairperson, get approval, etc.)
and things like that.
- A page on department history: when we started, how we developed
over the years.
- A page on special programs, such as MIE, Kellogg, GTE, GE,
- A page on courses offered, including this semester but also our
intentions about upcoming semesters, so students can plan for what
they'd like to take. Obviously, we can't guarantee that those
courses will be offered, but we often have a fairly good idea what
will be.
- I'd like to fill in the alumnae pages. Subject to concerns
about privacy, those pages could be a good networking tool for
students, helping them find jobs as well as old friends. The
Chemistry department is doing something like this.
- A calendar of upcoming events, talks, and so forth.
- There must be lots more we can do. What ideas do you have?
What pages would you like to volunteer to help with?
