Reaching Us

Here are a few ways of reaching us. If you need more information, please contact us.
Physical Mail
The mailing address of the department is
Computer Science Department
Campus Box 1257
Spelman College
350 Spelman Lane, SW
Atlanta, GA 30314-4399

Mail to that address is received by the Spelman College Mail Center, which is not a U.S. Post Office, and so it can receive mail deliveries from carriers (such as FedEx or UPS) that cannot deliver to U.S. Post Office boxes.

Phone
The department's administrative assistant is Ms. Wendy Goff. There is, unfortunately, no direct line to her phone. If you are off campus, please dial the Spelman general number (404-681-3643) and dial her extension, which is 2193.

If you are on-campus, you may dial Ms. Goff's extension directly from a campus phone.

Facsimile
We have a fax machine at 404-215-7923. That machine is in a faculty member's office, so it's preferred. There are also fax machines that answer at 404-223-1449 and 404-223-7662. Both of these fax machines are shared by many people, so be sure to include a cover sheet or otherwise indicate whom the document is for.

In any case, if the transmission is critical, it's helpful to phone or email the recipient, since faxes may not be picked up immediately.

email
Please send email to the department to compsci@spelman.edu. Email to that address is handled by one of us, and forwarded to others, as necessary. Please be patient; it may take a day or two to reply. If you don't receive a reply in three days, feel free to nudge us.

For contacting individual faculty members, please refer to our personal web pages, most of which contain contact information.

Directions from On Campus

If you would like to visit us, we are located on the second floor of the Academic Computer Center (ACC), also known as the Tapley Annex. It's easy to find us because the ACC is quite small: it has only two floors, and the first floor has no offices on it. The second floor has only one corridor, which leads to the department's administrative assistant, Ms. Goff. She can then direct you to whomever or whatever you need.

The ACC building is on the east side of the Spelman campus, between the Tapley science building to the south and Laura Spelman Hall to the north. (Laura Spelman Hall houses the Marian Wright Edelman Center--the nursery school.) We're across the oval, facing the Rockefeller administration building.

Directions from Off Campus

Spelman College is in Atlanta, Georgia. (For our international visitors, Georgia is the largest of the states in the southeast United States. Atlanta is a large city in the northwest part of Georgia, far from the coast.)

Plane

Most visitors from out of town fly to Atlanta via Hartsfield International Airport. Hartsfield is a large airport served by many airlines, but it is a major hub for Delta airlines and so the majority of flights are on Delta. However, any airline that serves the southeast United States should go to Atlanta.

Once you arrive, you can follow any of the following ground transportation directions to Spelman's campus.

MARTA

The mass-transit system in Atlanta is called "MARTA," which comprises local trains (subways) and buses. The subway stop that is nearest to Spelman is the "West End" stop. West End is near the southern end of the north-south subway line, the southern end of which is the airport, so it's quite convenient to take MARTA from the airport to West End.

Once at the West End station, you can walk about three long blocks (about half a mile) north to Spelman or you can take a taxi (recommended if it's after dark) or the Spelman shuttle bus, which runs every half an hour or so.

Taxi

Most taxi drivers in Atlanta will know where Spelman is. If not, don't give the driver the "350 Spelman Lane" address; that's for mail, not for cars. Say that Spelman is at the corner of Lee Street and West End Avenue. If that fails, use the driving directions below.

Car

The directions depend on which interstate you're coming from, but the directions are fairly easy, since Spelman is near Interstate 20.
From the east
  1. Head west on I-20, which cuts east-west through the center of Atlanta.
  2. Exit at Lee Street, exit 20. (The exit sign says "Lee Street, Atl Univ Ctr, McPherson Square"; the Atlanta University Center is a consortium of which Spelman is one of the constitutent schools.)

This is the first exit after I-20 crosses I-75/I-85 (which are contiguous through the center of Atlanta). The exit will be within a mile of I-75/I-85. Be careful, because another lane joins yours from the right as you approach the end of the ramp. At the end of the exit ramp, there is a traffic light.

  3. Turn right on Lee Street.
  4. Go down a short hill, just one block. There will be another traffic light at the bottom of the hill. (FYI, this is the intersection with West End Avenue and where Lee Street becomes Westview Drive.)
  5. Go straight through that traffic light. On your right is Spelman college campus. The most visible landmark will be a large, three-story parking structure, set back a little from the road, with parking lots around it. There's an entrance to the parking lot about 50-100 yards from the traffic light that you just went through.
  6. Turn right into campus. Straight ahead is a guard station, where the guard can tell you where to park and can direct you to buildings on campus.
From the north or south
Head toward the center of Atlanta using either I-75 (which cuts diagonally through Atlanta southeast-northwest) or I-85 (which cuts diagonally through Atlanta southwest-northeast). Once you intersect with I-20, take I-20 west and follow the directions above.
From the West
  1. Approach central Atlanta on I-20. Exit at Ashby Street. If you get to I-75/I-85, you've gone too far.
  2. Cross Ashby Street and continue on Oak Street to the next traffic light. (There's a BP station on the corner to your right, and a Popeye's chicken on the corner to your left.)
  3. Turn left on Lee Street and cross the bridge over I-20 and continue straight through the next traffic light.
  4. Follow the directions above, from step 4.

Hotel

Visitors to Spelman often stay at

The Suite Hotel at Underground
54 Peachtree Street, SW 30303
404-223-5555

The hotel is in downtown Atlanta, adjacent to the Five Points MARTA station, and is therefore convenient to the airport and the West End MARTA station. It's also a fairly short taxi ride from the hotel to Spelman.
