Linux is a member of the Unix family of operating systems. It runs on PC hardware, such as Intel Pentiums and Cyrix or AMD processors. Thus, it is an alternative to the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. Many of the faculty of the Computer Science Department use and like Linux, and a number of students have installed it on their home PCs. Most of these machines are dual-bootable, which means that you switch back and forth between Windows and Linux, just by rebooting your machine and choosing the other operating system.
