Rooms

The Spelman Computer Science Department currently has two classrooms, each approximately 500 square feet, and a workstation lab, also approximately 500 square feet.

The first classroom (ACC 1) seats about 35 to 40 students at chairs with table arms. It is typically used for larger lecture classes. It has a projection system, allowing the professor to show videos or do live demonstrations using the Pentium PC in the front of the classroom. There are another five PCs along one wall, allowing students to do hands-on exercises if the class is exceptionally small. Generally, those PCs are used only outside class time.

The second classroom (ACC 2) seats about 24 students at tables that have Unix workstations on them. This classroom is typically used for smaller classes, particularly those for Computer Science majors. The workstations can be used for in-class exercises or interactive demonstrations.

The Unix lab contains Sun workstations on long tables. The room is used, not surprisingly, for lab sections, in which students work through programming exercises with the help of the professor and, sometimes, a teaching assistant. Most courses for first and second year Computer Science majors include one weekly two-hour lab section.

Equipment

The department has the following equipment:
  • The Unix lab contains 23 Sun workstations, most of which are Sparc-5s and the rest are Ultra-10s. The Unix workstations all run the Solaris 2.6 operating system.
  • ACC 1 contains 1 Pentium PC and 5 Intel 486 PCs. All run Windows 95.
  • ACC 2 contains 14 Sun Ultra-10 Unix workstations. The exact configuration varies, but most have 330 MHz processors and have 128 MB of RAM.
  • Five more Pentium-class PCs in ACC 200. ACC 200 is a Spelman open lab; it is not used for classes, but instead offers computer access to students whenever the building is open. Most of the PCs in that classroom are operated by CIT, not by the Computer Science Department.
  • Four SGI O2 graphics workstations are also located in ACC 200.
  • An 8-processor SGI Origin 2000 is available over the network. This machine is a shared-memory parallel computer, jointly purchased with the Physics and Chemistry departments.
  • Networks lab equipment, including ethernet, ring and FDDI network hardware and software.
  • Two Activmedia Pioneer robots
  • VCR, TV and projector, for classroom demonstrations and videos.
  • two digital cameras, for uses such as making pictures for use on web pages
  • twelve Logic Trainers (breadboards) and chips, for use in the Computer Organization and Design course.
  • several Lego Mindstorms Robots, for use by the ACM Programming Team.
In addition, each professor has a Sun workstation, most of which are Ultra-10 class, and a Pentium-class PC. The PCs run either Windows 95 or Windows NT.
