Interview with Brenda Armstrong, M.D.:

How does Duke Medical School accommodate minority students?

Duke University Medical School is dedicated to increasing the number of women and minorities in the medical field; therefore, minority or underrepresented students tend to receive more financial aid than majority students.

What was the average GPA for the 2006 entering class?

The average GPA was around a 3.61.  This is not to say that no student with an undergraduate GPA below 3.61 was admitted to the school; however,  this number does show that the majority of our students are hard-workers.

What hospitals are linked to your institution?

The Duke University Medical School has its own hospital.  The Duke University hospital actually has one of the best cardiology centers in the South.  People from across the country and the world come to Duke University hospital because we have some of the best doctors ad surgeons in the world.

What word best describes Duke?

Tradition.

Personal Reflection

Although it was difficult to write down every word that Dr. Armstrong said in the interview, I paid special attention to her priority of attracting women and minorities to the school.  As an African American women, it is very important that the institutions I am considering for medical school have some kind of program set up for the successful matriculation for minorities.  I chose Duke as one of my Top 3 medical school choices because of it's phenomenal reputation, it's location, and it's connection to one of the best hospitals in the world.  Dr. Armstrong had a wonderful personality and spoke about Duke Medical School with passion.
