CIS 100 -- Excel Assignment 3
The purpose of this assignment is exercise your Excel skills on
something of immediate, practical value: calculating your grade in this
class.
Following the kinds of steps we did in lab, figure out your grade in this
class. Here's how to do it:
- Put your name in A1.
- Make a table of the components of your grade, based on your
syllabus, and how much each of them counts.
- Make a pie chart of these components. Make sure all the parts of
the chart are properly labeled (titles, wedges, etc.) Make sure the
chart isn't on top of any part of your table.
- Make a table (like the one in section 7.4 of your lab book) of all
the grades you have gotten and will get in this class. There were three
WP assignments, there will be three Excel assignments and three Access
assignments. There is also the ``buying a Computer'' assignment. You
also have test grades and your quiz grade.
- Fill in the grades you have so far. For the quiz grade, count the
number of problems you got right, divided by the number of problems, and
multiply that fraction by 100 (to convert it to a percentage). For
example, if you got 9 right out of 12, that would be (9/12)*100, which
is 75 percent.
- Make a line chart of all your grades so far.
- For the ``project'' grade, which you don't have yet, put in 100.
- Compute, using a formula, the average grade in each category (tests,
applications, and so forth). Put these in cells, with a neighboring
cell for each that labels what it is.
- Experiment with using the @AVG(...) function. Use it for
the preceding step.
- Make a bar chart of the component averages. Make sure that all
relevant parts of the chart are properly labeled (titles, x-axis,
y-axis, etc.).
- Compute, using a formula, the overall course average.
- Change the ``project'' grade to find the lowest grade you can get on
it and still get an A. In other words, change the project
grade, which will change the overall course average, until the overall
average is just barely over 90. Don't use more than 100 or less than
zero for your project grade. If it's impossible to get an A,
compute the minimum to get a B or C, whatever is
achievable.
- Use lines and color to jazz up one of your tables.
- Use an appropriate custom type for one of your tables.
Check with the Instructor as to how this assignment is to be turned in.
This whole assignment should take you less than an hour. If it is
taking you longer than that, find someone to ask for help.
