Spelman Academic Honesty Adjudication Procedures

The procedure for review of alleged academic code of conduct violations in course-related offenses is outlined below:
  1. The instructor of the course in which an alleged violation has occurred will submit a written statement identifying the student in question and the details of the incident to the Academic Dean and to the department chair. If there is sufficient supporting evidence, the Academic Dean will charge the accused student with a specific violation of the academic code of conduct and inform her of adjudication procedures, including her right to appeal.
  2. The accused student will then have ten working days to file an appeal with the Academic Dean. If the student odes not appeal the charge, the Academic Dean will notify the instructor. The instructor will then administratively withdraw the student from the course and assign her a grade of "F."

If the student does not appeal a second or third charge, the Academic Dean will notify her instructor. The instructor will then administratively withdraw the student from the course and assign her a grade of "F." The Academic Dean will subsequently notify the accused student and appropriate officers of the College regarding the student's status (i.e., suspension or expulsion).

If the student appeals the charge, the Academic Dean or a designee will convene a panel of the Academic Honesty Appeals Board to conduct a hearing. The Board, chaired by the Academic Dean or her designee, will review the charge and any supporting documentation.

The Academic Honesty Appeals Board, comprised of one faculty representative from each division, one faculty member selected by the student, and another faculty member appointed by the Academic Dean from the same academic division as the student's representative, will hear testimony and review documentation provided by the student, the instructor, and any other person who may have information necessary to the adjudication. After reviewing all evidence and testimony, voting members of the Board will decide the case.

The Student's faculty representative will be a voting member of the Board. The academic Dean or appointed designee will not vote except in the case of a tie. The Dean's appointed faculty member will not vote.

A majority of eligible Board member will decide whether the accused student will be found guilty and sanctioned for the alleged offense or whether she will be exonerated. The Academic Dean will then notify the faculty member, the student(s) and the proper officers of the College of the Board's decision.

  3. The decision of the Academic Honesty Appeals Boards may be appealed by either the student or the faculty member to the President of the College within ten working days after notification of the judgement. Inquiries from parents regarding judgements shall be referred to the Academic Dean. The instructor and the Board member will not be allowed to discuss the case.
  4. A student from another Atlanta University Center institution who has violated the Spelman academic code of conduct will receive an "F" for the course in which the violation occurred. The Spelman Academic Dean will notify the Academic Dean of the student's home institution. Appeal procedures will rest with that institution.
