Spelman Statement on Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is the cornerstone of any academic institution and is essential for the production and distribution of knowledge. Each student is required to abide by Spelman's code of conduct and is expected to produce work that reflects her own ideas and analysis as well as her interpretation of the work of others.

The Spelman faculty is committed to maintaining the integrity of the College and its academic programs. The faculty seeks the cooperation and support of every member of the College community in contributing to an institutional culture that affirms honesty, trust and mutual respect.

Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating on quizzes, tests, midterm and final examinations and submitting plagiarized work (including papers, portfolios, performances or journals). A student plagiarizes when she fails to acknowledge ideas, interpretations, analyses, or productions that are not her own. Academic dishonesty also includes fraudulent practices such as falsification or forgery of academic records (e.g., transcripts and registration forms) and the submission of falsified documents that support class absences or a request for an extension or an incomplete grade.

Every student is responsible for reading and abiding by the policy on academic dishonesty. Every faculty member is required to announce the policy in each class and to establish a climate that encourages honesty and enhances learning.

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. The following sanctions will apply to any student found guilty of violating the academic code of conduct:

  1. A student who is charged with and subsequently found guilty of her first violation of the academic code of conduct will be given a grade of "F" in the course in which the offense occurred.
  2. A student who is found guilty of a second violation will be given a grade of "F" in the course and will be suspended from the College for the following semester.
  3. A student who is found guilty of a third violation will be given a grade of "F" in the course and will be expelled from the College at the end of the semester.
