Protecting Yourself

Public Saftey Home

Some steps you can take to protect yourself and your property are

  • Lock your room when sleeping and when you leave your room.
  • Secure residence halls 24 hours. Never prop open any of the entrance or exit doors of a residence hall.
  • If you are assaulted, yell "fire" and keep yelling. Attempt to break away from your assailant and run toward lights or people.
  • Make a list of serial numbers, brand names, models, and descriptions of your valuable items.
  • Never leave your wallet, checkbook, or keys lying on top of your desk.
  • Keep valuables hidden.
  • Report lost room keys to your resident director.
  • Report any theft to the Department of Public Safety immediately.

Off-Campus Safety Tips:

  • Be cautious of men and others whom you don't know. Not everyone who wears a college shirt is a college student and not all college students are noble and kind.
  • Go out with a prospective date in a group before going out with your date alone.
  • Be careful with your money and personal belongings in the city. Watch your purse and surroundings at all times.
  • If possible, use the ATM machine in Manley Center-- it is safer.
  • Never get into cars with strangers, no matter how friendly or helpful they are.
  • Be suspicious of "get rich quick" schemes or "hook-ups" that others may offer. You are always personally responsible for the consequences of your actions.
  • Never leave the campus alone on foot at night. Call a taxi service, which is always available.
