Civic Engagement Fellows Program

Civic Engagement is defined as “to participate intentionally as a citizen in the democratic process, actively engaging in public policy and direct service.” This nine week certificate program is designed to support the education of students who have an interest and commitment to engage in sustained social change efforts. Selected participants (15 - 20 students) meet on Wednesdays from 5:30pm – 8:00pm in a boardroom/classroom setting.

The purpose of the course is to deepen the participant’s understanding of civic engagement through interactive sessions and panel discussions. Through group assignments and projects selected participants can expect to graduate from the course with the understanding on the specific tools for civic engagement and how to apply civic skills.

Each student will receive a Certificate of Civic Engagement and will be recognized by Spelman for their achievement.

Process
The application process is competitive and is open to only Juniors and Seniors who are civic-minded and have demonstrated leadership potential. All fields of study are encouraged to apply. Fall 2009 Study Abroad students are not eligible for consideration because a face-to-face interview is required.

Applications are due by October 30, 2009. Interviews will be scheduled for the week of November 2nd, 9th and 16th. Each selected CEFP applicant will be notified by e-mail on or before November 25, 2009.
