Student Publications
Creative expression is strongly encouraged at Spelman, and Spelman's student publications provide creative outlets for our students. Students with talents and interests in literary pursuits are encouraged to submit articles to the campus publications and to volunteer to serve on the staff of one of the student publications.
Spelman Spotlight, the student newspaper, is published monthly during the regular academic year. It reflects the creative expression and general awareness of Spelman students. A selection committee designated by the Dean of Students chooses the editor-in-chief. The rest of the staff is made up of student volunteers from all classifications. All students are especially urged to submit essays, poems, short stories, and articles. The deadline for submitting materials for each issue will be posted.
The Jaguar Print,
the
student newsletter, is published monthly during the regular
academic year by the Office of Student Activities (OSA).
Founded in October 2004 under the Spelman Student Government
Association (SSGA), this newsletter began as a means of communication
between the SSGA and the student body, which highlighted
various activities and accomplishments of students and student
organizations. Currently, under the OSA, The Jaguar Print
primarily focuses on Miss Spelman and the Court, PULSE (the
student programming board), as well as SSGA and the Class
Councils. Articles dealing with a variety of topics are gladly
accepted from all students, and can be emailed to TheJaguarPrint@aol.com.
Reflections, the College yearbook, is published annually by the student body and presents a pictorial and literary view of life at Spelman. A selection committee designated by the Director of Student Activities selects the co-editors who select members of the staff.
Focus, the campus magazine, is published annually and features creative writing by Spelman students. The editor is selected by the chair of the English department. All students are encouraged to submit their writings for publication.
Although the College does not seek to exercise veto power over the content of these publications, they are expected to maintain the highest standards of journalism when publishing material for and about the Spelman Community.
L-I-N-K-E-D aims to showcase the talents of student writers and artists, as well as established and emerging writers and visual artists from various communities, using the World Wide Web.
The larger mission of L-I-N-K-E-D is to establish connections among artists around the world and, specifically, throughout the African Diaspora. Whether contributors to L-I-N-K-E-D reside in North/South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, or anywhere else on the globe, we want to show that people of African descent/ancestry are connected in a plethora of ways. L-I-N-K-E-D proves that among our various commonalities throughout the Diaspora, artistic expression is a link that keeps us bound to the roots of our native land.
We seek exciting, challenging works of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, photography and other visual art, sound, and video from artists of all cultural backgrounds dedicated to craft, and especially artists of color interested in "virtual" community building and interdisciplinary and multimedia engagement. We value creativity. We believe in beauty and the power of ideas. We believe in art--the "hurt" and the "voyages."
