Student Activities Forms
The Office of Student Activities works directly with chartered organizations, the Student Government Association, the yearbook and newspaper editors, and others to develop and implement social, educational, and community-oriented programs for the Spelman woman.
We are committed to building a community of African-American women who will be the leaders of tomorrow. Getting involved in student organizations, activities, and committees is an excellent way to develop leadership potential.
Spelman Student Government Association
The Spelman Student Government Association (SSGA) is composed of student representatives who meet regularly to discuss matters of general concern regarding students. The assembly acts as a liaison between the student body and the faculty, staff, administration. Representatives present proposals, programs, activities, and resolutions that reflect the tenor of student opinion. They also seek to further sisterhood among Spelman women as well as to help students gain an understanding of themselves, our society, and our heritage.
In addition to discussing educational and social issues confronting Spelman College students, the Student Government Association allocates funds to all student clubs and organizations to assist them with their programming and leadership needs. House of Representatives
The House of Representatives is the legislative branch of the Spelman Student Government Association. They assist in the governance of chartered student organizations.
Class Councils
Provide each class with social outlets to raise school spirit, provide means of fundraising, and promote community service. Members of each Class Council have an arena to constructively voice concerns and become actively involved in class activities and the College community.
Freshman Class Council
This council enhances the growth of the freshman class through the interaction of academic, social and spiritual activities.
Sophomore Class Council
The council unites, empowers, advances and encourages the sophomore class. They also communicate with Spelman Student Government Association, peers, administration and the neighboring community to create a more cohesive environment that nurtures academic, social and spiritual growth.
Junior Class Council
This council serves the junior class through community service and enrichment activities. They also serve as a voice to the administration and community through representation.
Senior Class Council
This council serves as a voice for the senior class. In addition, the organization gathers suggestions from the class regarding class activities such as graduation and represents class concerns to the Spelman administration.
Sororities
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. commits itself to actively
upholding the ideals of scholarship, sisterhood, and service.
In the sorority’s dedication to be of service to all
mankind, it remains the premier organization for outstanding
African-American college educated women.
Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. engages in cultural, educational and public service activities. It also establishes, maintains, and encourages high cultural, intellectual, and moral standards.
Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity
SAI is an international fraternity for women that fosters and promotes social contact among persons sharing an interest in music.
Zeta Phi Beta
Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. promotes the cause of education by encouraging the highest standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, cultural, and educational programs and promoting charitable projects.
Honor Societies
Alpha Epsilon Delta
This society assists in the development of pre-med students by providing enriching and scholarly opportunities. In addition, AED initiates and participates in activities which will benefit health organizations, charities, and the community.
Alpha Lambda Delta
ALD encourages superior academic achievement among first year students in institutions of higher education. Further, they promote intelligence living and a continued high standard of learning.
Alpha Sigma Lambda
This national honor society advances scholarship and recognizes academically talented students in the Spelman College Gateway Program.
Beta Kappa Chi
This national scientific honor society recognizes achievement in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and experimental psychology at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Golden Key International Honor Society
Golden Key recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement in all undergraduate fields of study, unites with faculty and administrators in developing and maintaining high standards of education and promotes scholarship to members.
Kappa Delta Epsilon
KDE promotes the cause of education by fostering a spirit of fellowship, high standards of scholastic attainment and professional ideals among its members.
Mortar Board Senior Honor Society
This national honor society of seniors selects members on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and service. Candidates are rising seniors with a minimum 3.0 cumulative G.P.A.
National Society of Collegiate Scholars
NSCS's mission is to recognize and celebrate high achievement, encourage and promote high standards, provide opportunities for personal and leadership development and organize and encourage community service.
Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society
This esteemed honor society recognizes scholarship and supports excellence and integrity in the pursuit of the arts and sciences. Members are elected primarily on the basis of broad cultural interests, scholarly achievements, and good character.
Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society
The national political science honor society requires a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 and a minimum of twelve hours in political science. The vibrant organization functions as an integral part of the extracurricular activities related to public affairs throughout the academic year.

In order to qualify for Psi Chi,
the
student must have completed a minimum of twenty semester
hours in psychology, have an average of at least 3.4 in
psychology
courses, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4.
Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society
Sigma Tau Delta facilitates scholarship in English language and literature. In addition, they recognize scholarship in students while helping enrich Spelman College and the surrounding communities.
Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society for the Computing Sciences
This society promotes the computing and information disciplines and encourages their contribution to the enhancement of knowledge.
Academic and Professional Clubs
Association for Computing Machinery
ACM is an educational and scientific society that is dedicated to advancing the art, science engineering and application of information technology. They also foster the open interchange of information to serve professional and public entities.
The Biology Club
Gives students majoring in biology a chance to get to know each other outside of the classroom. Programs help acquaint the membership with the many areas of study they could pursue and the career opportunities that are available. Social activities are also offered.
The Chemistry Club
Encourages student interest in chemistry. The members meet periodically to learn about the diverse chemical careers and new chemical techniques. The club sponsors speakers periodically and offers support not only to chemistry majors, but also to biochemistry and chemical engineering majors.
The Dark Tower Project
DTP seeks to link the relevant artists of today with the young artists of the future.
Diverge Art Club
Diverge enhances the educational, cultural, professional and aesthetic experiences of art students and non-art students. They also coordinate activities and events that benefit and enhance the development of young artists, while increasing the visibility of visual arts in the Atlanta University Center and assuring a deeper appreciation for art.
The Economics Club
A professional club striving to promote the career development of its members through a variety of activities. It provides tutorial services to students studying economics.
The English Club
Brings English majors together for fellowship while promoting scholarship and investigating graduate study and career opportunities. It also sponsors community and College service activities and encourages preparation and presentation of individual literary efforts to the College community.
The French Club
Offers students studying French an opportunity to familiarize themselves with French-speaking cultures. It also helps enhance their command of the language.
The Health Careers Club
Provides students interested in the health professions the opportunity to broaden their horizons and make an in-depth exploration of various health professions. Members of the Health Careers Club are concerned with the delivery of health services. Activities include visits to health care facilities, lectures, discussions, seminars and workshops with a health focus.
Japanese Club
The Japanese (Nippon) Club is for Spelman and all AUC students who are interested in learning about Japan, its culture, and language. The club organizes and participates in various Japanese related social and cultural activities on campus as well as in town.
The Mathematics Club
Composed of mathematics majors or minors, the club is organized to promote interest in mathematics, sponsor discussions on mathematics careers, promote mathematics related projects and encourage scholarship in mathematical studies.
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
NSBE stimulates and assists in the nurturing and retention of students interested in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, computer science and engineering related fields.
The Philosophy Society
This society promotes informal discussions among philosophy students on topics of the students' own choice. In addition, the society organizes an annual colloquium to which students are encouraged to read original papers that they have written.
Physics Club
The Physics Club provides advice and assistance in physics related areas and serves as a resource for physics awareness on campus.
Pre-Law Society (Morehouse/Spelman)
The Pre-Law Society's purpose is to equip interested undergraduate students with all of the faculties necessary to enter the law profession.
The Psychology Club
Engages in activities that range from general exploration of the discipline of psychology to interaction with professional psychologists. The club also helps its members explore employment opportunities within the field.
Rotaract Club (Morehouse/Spelman)
The Rotaract club provides an opportunity for students to foster better relationships between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.
Student Georgia Association of Educators
SGAE's purpose is to grant liability coverage to every child development major or minor. In addition, the club provides its members with scholarships, grants and certification.
Toni Cade Bambara Scholar Activists
Toni Cade Bambara Scholar Activists seeks to promote black feminist activism on Spelman's campus.
Special Interest Groups
ABLE Youth Leadership Institute
ABLE trains students to serve as mentors in public schools surrounding the campus.
Afrakete
Serves as a support mechanism for lesbian, bisexual and other same sex students to provide a "safe space" in which self-esteem and positive images of African American women may be cultivated.
AUC Council of Students
The council's goal is to erase stereotypes and promote unity within the Atlanta University Center and surrounding communities through community service, informational sessions, political activism and social activities.
This organization is a grass-roots organization established to raise the awareness of the community about environmental education.
Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance
FMLA promotes local, state, national and global equality between women and men and girls and boys. Further, they promote non-violence and empowerment, and encourage Spelman women to embrace a Black feminist identity.
The Granddaughters Club
Organized in 1910 under the initiative of Miss Lucy Houghton Upton, then General Secretary of Spelman Seminary. Students whose mothers or aunts are graduates of Spelman are active members of the club; students whose mothers or aunts attended but did not graduate are associate members. The purposes of the club are to study and preserve all information connected with memorial names and buildings, rooms, trees, plants, furniture or permanent possessions; to pass on to new students the traditions of the school; and especially to keep the solemn promise that no Spelman woman would ever bring reproach upon her name. On Founders' Day, the Granddaughters decorate the Memorial Plaques honoring the founders Miss Sophia B. Packard and Miss Harriet E. Giles.
Honda Campus All-Star Challenge
This organization exists to promote academic competition in campus tournaments and scrimmage activities and to prepare a college team for the national team tournament.
The International Students Organization
Composed of international students and interested American students. It provides opportunities for fellowship among students who are far away from their homes, as well as enrichment of the College community through activities which facilitate closer acquaintance with cultures represented by members of the organization. The club sponsors College and community service activities and provides a support system for students as they adjust to the demands of living in a foreign setting.
Media Arts Society of Spelman
MASS is structured to provide an environment where students can learn the basic skills that will give them a chance to enter a career in the media arts.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Seeks to improve the political, educational, and social status of minority groups, to eliminate racial discrimination, and to keep the community aware of its adverse effects. It also promotes fair treatment of African Americans in education and community service.
The Pauline E. Drake Scholars
The Pauline E. Drake Scholars is a recognized student organization established to serve the special needs and concerns of the Gateway Program non-traditional students.
Peer Education Program (PEPers)
A group of women selected for their interest and activism in promoting the emotional and mental health of their peers. They are selected each spring semester through an application and interview process. This organization is part of BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network, a national peer education program. Projects are designed around the topics of self-esteem, substance abuse prevention, racism, mental health, intimate violence prevention, healthy relationships, eating disorders, and emotional and mental wellness.
Philanthropy Council
The council seeks to serve the Spelman College community by creating programs that ignite the philanthropic spirit.
The Spelman PAC is dedicated to raising money to attend regional and national conferences, doing community service and fostering loyalty between current college students and their respective institutions.
Resident Assistant Council
This organization serves as a liaison between the Spelman College Community and the resident assistants with the goal of enhancing student life.
SisterFire Collective
SisterFire facilitates experiences at Spelman College that will provide young women with tools for self-empowerment.
Sister Steps
Fosters intellectual, social, and cultural growth and development in female African American students from low-income areas of the Atlanta-Metropolitan area.
Sociological and Anthropological Sisterhood: Scholar Activists for Reshaping Attitudes at Spelman
SASSAFRAS is a collective whose spheres of action and insight include scholar activists, campuses and local and global communities. Their aim is to be a dynamic force of empowerment in these three spheres.
Spelman College Cheerleaders
The purpose of this organization is to provide support to athletic teams. Cheerleading encompasses the elements of dance, gymnastics and fitness into one discipline that serves other sports.
Spriggs-Burroughs Ensemble
The Spriggs-Burroughs Ensemble provides an outlet for students to explore their talents and creative abilities through all aspects of theatre and the performing arts. Furthermore, it allows students and the community to develop an appreciation for and dedication to this field.
Spelman College Jazz Ensemble
Winds, strings and jazz offers additional opportunities for students to continue the performance and study of their instruments.
Spelman College Glee Club
The primary choral organization for the college. Composed entirely of Spelman students, it performs on Founders Day, Commencement and at numerous other designated times throughout the academic year. The Glee Club has achieved a reputation for fine singing and welcomes those students who are interested in sharing their talents and abilities with others.
Student Health Associates and Peer Educators (SHAPE)
A group of certified BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Educators dedicated to educating Spelman women and teens in the surrounding community around issues of HIV/AIDS, STDs, breast cancer, nutrition and fitness, teen pregnancy prevention and other women's health issues. SHAPE members are extensively trained to serve as a campus resource.
Students in Free Enterprise
SIFE makes a difference in the community by helping people develop a better understanding of how the free enterprise system works and how to use this information to empower themselves and achieve new successes.
Students for the Preservation of Sisterhood
SPS seeks to restore, strengthen and maintain the bonds of sisterhood throughout the campus and its surrounding community.
Taking Responsibility To Understand Each Other
The purpose of T.R.U.E. is to enhance disability awareness among students, staff and faculty at Spelman College, and to inform them of the disability services offered by the college.
State Organizations
Help students maintain contact with their home state by strengthening friendships among students from the same state. These groups hold social activities, establish travel connections among students, and perform social service projects for the College and the Atlanta community. Alabaster Box
The purpose of Alabaster box is to honor and glorify God, to offer an opportunity for fun and fellowship for young Christians, and to lead souls to Christ.
Al-Nissa
Enables Muslim women to provide support for each other and to learn more about the Islamic faith.
Atlanta Adventist Collegiate Society
Acts to encourage and support the spiritual development of college-age individuals in the greater Atlanta community.
AUC Baha'i Club
Provides contact between Baha'is throughout the AUC, informs AUC students about the Baha'i Faith, and has activities that are representative of some of the beliefs of the Baha'i Faith--that there is only one God, one human race and one religion.
Campus Crusade for Christ
Campus Crusade for Christ provides opportunities for students to continue to develop the spiritual dimension of their lives. Their program includes bible discussion, leadership development, socials and special seminars.
Crossfire International Campus Ministry
This organization seeks to train current ministry leaders in mentorship and leadership and to draw other college students to the gospel through creative and non-threatening outreach.
Campus Crusade for Christ (Harambee)
Guides students to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, helps students in their spiritual and emotional growth and development, and trains students to effectively share with others the principles of biblical Christianity.
Happiness In Praise for His Overflowing Presence
Hip 4 Hop is a college campus Bible Study open to all students. Their main focus is to guide individuals as they personally explore how to maintain a close, vibrant relationship with Christ.
Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship
IVCF establishes themselves at colleges and universities, witnessing to communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus Christ.
Movements of Praise Dance Team
Provides opportunities for learning to praise and worship God through various forms of dance, concentrating on the biblical significance of liturgical dance. The group uses dance as a vehicle for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Newman Organization
The mission of the Newman Organization is to establish spiritual, academic and faith development for the Atlanta University Center family with a spirit of Christian love and service in the Black Catholic tradition.
The Outlet
Formerly known as Peculiar, the Outlet's goal is to provide a loving and nurturing environment for all students as they minister to specific needs.
The Pre-Theology Society
An organization composed of religion majors and minors who are preparing themselves academically for careers in the field of religion.
