Senior LaDarrien Gillette is a 2015-2016 Dalai Lama Fellow

October 2015

LaDarrien GilletteInternational studies major LaDarrien Gillette, C'2016, has been named a Dalai Lama Fellow for the 2015-2016 academic year. As a Dalai Lama Fellow, Gillette will receive $10,000 to implement Priceless Ambassadors, a curriculum aimed at teaching young Black girls about the issue of sex trafficking in the Atlanta area.

This year, she plans to expand the project to raise awareness and provide mentorship to middle-school girls about the dangers of human trafficking, social media safety, healthy relationships and Black women's roles in the media.

The curriculum will consist of 15 lesson plans, speakers from the community, trips to prominent organizations and self-defense lessons.

Gillette's Personal Passion

I have been working on the issue of child sex trafficking for the last three years. Prompted to do more research after watching a movie, I discovered that the city I lived in was high on the list for child sex trafficking. For two and a half years, I worked with various organizations in Atlanta to bring awareness to college students about the issue and how they could get involved. With Priceless Ambassadors, I am planning to extend that awareness project to take on a mentorship component.

Over the course of the Project Year, Gillette hopes to create a bond that will last a lifetime between Spelman College students and young Black girls in the West End community of Atlanta.

"I am hope Priceless Ambassadors will continue to be an organization on Spelman’s campus that will teach young girls how to avoid becoming vulnerable to sex trafficking," she said.

A global program personally authorized by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Dalai Lama Fellowship envisions and works toward a world that tends to the good of the whole as well as the individual.
