Q.  How many community service hours do I have to complete?

Q.  Can community service hours from previous semesters be rolled over?

1st Year Students – Community service hours can be performed and logged from October 2013 – April 2014.      

2nd Year Students - Community Service hours from previous semesters cannot be rolled over.

Q.  What is considered acceptable community service?

The Bonner Office defines community service as:

  • Performing an altruistic act
  • Work or effort put forth, without pay, to benefit a community or its institutions
  • Fulfilling a community need
  • Working directly with the citizens of a community to fulfill a social need

Q.  What is considered unacceptable community service?

  • Vendor sales (ex. GA Dome concessions)
  • Fundraising (ex. Car washes, Awareness walks, etc.)
  • Religious Activities (ex. Chorus, Ushering, etc.)

If you are unsure about your service activity, contact the Community Service Coordinator prior to your service.

Q. I received an Incomplete during my Freshman/Sophomore year, what happens now?

  • You will have to make up the hours you missed plus additional hours the following semester.
  • Once you make-up your hours and they are approved, they will be submitted to the Dean’s Office.
  • Make-up Requirements:
    • Missed hours during the 1st Year: 10 hours + 8 current hours due
    • Missed hours during 2nd Year: 12 per semester + 8 current hours due

Q. Is transportation provided?

The Bonner Office provides a couple of transportation options:

Community Service Shuttle Van

The Service Shuttle only services select nonprofit organizations that are in reasonable distance of the College. Prior to scheduling your visit, please review the Shuttle Service schedule to determine if your service site is listed.

Marta

Marta Breeze cards are available to Spelman students who actively volunteer a minimum of 5 hours a week. For those eligible for this incentive, you will need to register on-line through Volunteer Solutions. Obtain your Marta Breeze cards 1 week prior to your scheduled service.

Q.  Where can I perform my community service hours?

The Bonner Office requires the following guidelines for acceptable community service sites:

  • Agency/Organization must hold a 501(c) 3 tax status.
  • Agency/Organization MUST be registered on Volunteer Solutions.
  • All service must be performed OUTSIDE the Atlanta University Center gates, but within the Metro Atlanta area.
  • We encourage students to serve the community within a 1.7 mile radius surrounding Spelman College. –Project Impact
  • If you wish to complete service hours with an agency/organization not registered on Volunteer Solutions, you MUST complete a Service Site Pre-approval Form, prior to completing the service.

Q.   What if the organization I am volunteering with is not listed on Volunteer Solutions?

You MUST complete a Service Site Pre-approval Form.

  • The form must be completed and signed by your service site supervisor and the Spelman College Community Service Coordinator, prior to completing service with the organization.
  • Service Site Pre-approval Forms are available in the Bonner Office, Manley Center, Room 202.
  • Service Site Pre-approval Forms take up to five (5) business days to approve.
  • Service Site Pre-approval Forms must be submitted and approved prior to completing service hours.

Q.  How do I submit my community service hours?

1.            Register on http://spelman.galaxydigital.com/

2.            On the student home page, click on LOG HOURS on the right.

Option 1

  • Service Sites registered on Volunteer Solutions

SEARCH for an agency or opportunity already in the system.

Option 2

  • Service Sites not registered on Volunteer Solutions

Option 3

(LOGS HOURS FOR AN ORGANIZATION)
on this page allows you to key in information about the agency with whom you have volunteered.  This can be done as long as you have a completed and approved Service Site Pre-approval Form on file with the Bonner Office.

*PLEASE NOTE: Your hours will not be approved if you do not have a completed and approved Service Site Pre-approval Form on file, your hours will not be accepted.

3.Save and Continue.

Q.  I can’t find a service site that fits my schedule.  What should I do?
