Spelman's Independent Scholars
SIS Sojourns to Ghana, West Africa
In
addition to conducting oral history interviews
with African American Women of Wisdom in
the Atlanta area, Spelman Independent Scholars
(SIS) enhance their knowledge of the African
diaspora through travel. This academic year,
from March 4 to March 13, 2005, they traveled
to Ghana, West Africa, and were accompanied by SIS
Visiting Scholar in Traditional Medicine,
Dr. Virginia Davis Floyd, president
of PROMETRA US A.
While there, they visited
the cities of Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.
Among other historic sites,
they visited the Kwame Nkrumah Museum, a
landmark dedicated to the memory of Kwame
Nkrumah; Bonwire, one of the few authentic Kente
cloth-making villages in the world; Akrofuom,
the home of one of the Young Scholars; and
El Mina, a historic slave castle. The Young Scholars also visited the headquarters
of PROMETRA Ghana, where they had the opportunity
to meet traditional healers and AIDS survivors.
