Archibong Selected to Work and Learn in Washington, D.C.

Miriam Archibong, C'2009, was recently selected by Dr.
Beverly Daniel Tatum and Dr. Geneva Baxter, associate dean of undergraduate studies, to attend an all-expense paid, two-week program, hosted by The Washington Center, an educational nonprofit organization providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C. for academic credit.

The program, which took place in Washington D.C. from January 6, through January 18, 2008, provided students from around the country an opportunity to analyze the issues and the candidates participating in the 2008 presidential election. Archibong along with her classmate Lyndosha Griffin, C'2009, benefited from the Washington experience.

Miriam Archibong, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, is a junior majoring in political science. She was one of only 16 students in the nation to be named a 2007 Goldman Sachs Global Leader. As a Goldman Sachs Global Leader, she received an all expense paid trip to New York in April 2007, as well as an educational scholarship in the amount of $3000.00. In August of 2007, Archibong also represented Spelman College at the Building Engagement and Attainment for Minority Students (BEAMS) Conference held in Taos, New Mexico.

Archibong is a Gates Millennium Scholar, winner of the Discover Card Tribute Award, and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the National Collegiate Scholars Society.

Archibong has an affinity for her school and for her Spelman sisters. During her terms as freshman and sophomore class president, she founded the Class of 2009 Book Scholarship, and coordinated an annual gospel concert to raise funds for the scholarship. To date, over $4,000.00 has been raised for the book scholarship fund.

Additionally, Archibong secured six $25.00 gift cards from the Barnes and Nobles Bookseller, located in the Edgewood Retail District, for the first six book scholarship recipients. Archibong really believes in sisterhood; and, as a result, the book scholarship is now open to the entire Spelman community.

Archibong is also the president and founder of Taking Action to Overcome Obesity (T.A.T.O.O.), an organization recently chartered by the Spelman Student Government Association. The organization was founded under the principle of sisterhood and community. Members of this organization are accountable to one another and the members work proactively to achieve their health goals.

Prior to her arrival at Spelman College, Archibong founded the Grady High School Vegetarian Club, and successfully lobbied the Atlanta Board of Education to establish the first governmentally funded vegetarian lunch line in the U.S. Her efforts to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity have been featured on CNN's Fit Nation tour, Go Vegan Texas of KPFT 90.1 FM, and several other media outlets.

The Spelmanite has interned with CNN.com and CNN Radio for two consecutive summers; and, recently worked as a summer instructor at the New School's of Carver High School. In the fall of 2007, Archibong hosted an all day college and scholarship summit at the New School’s of Carver High School of Technology.

Archibong is very passionate about helping others, and hopes to one day become an educator. Currently, she enjoys being a mentor to four Atlanta Public high school students and working as the Executive Director of the Extended Day Program at the New School's of Carver High School of Technology.
